Heath Robinson – used to describe a machine that is very cleverly made and is complicated in a silly or humorous way, often with no practical use. Quite often used in a pejorative sense to criticise early rough and ready prototypes. Named after William Heath Robinson, 1872-1944 an English cartoonist, illustrator and artist, best known for drawings of whimsically elaborate machines to achieve simple objectives.
